Besides hosting a noted Italian university, Urbino is one of the most important Renaissance cites in Italy and is famous all over the world for being the hometown of Raffaello Sanzio, one of the most important painters of the Italian Renaissance period. Thanks to the patronage of Duke Federico da Montefeltro, Urbino became an important political and cultural center of that time. The Duke’s palace, today, hosts the “Galleria Nazionale delle Marche” where one can admire masterpieces of Raffaello, Piero della Francesca and Paolo Uccello. The Gallery also exhibits the Renaissance emblem “La Città Ideale”.
